2011 Jazz in the Olympics Band Lineup

Mr. Dan Barrett

Dan Barrett’s musical credits are, truly, too long to mention. He is known for his work with the trombone, cornet, and piano and as an arranger. He has played with the big bands of New York. He has played in and appeared in movies. He regularly plays with Rebecca Kilgore’s group BED. He has left his mark in New Orleans. But, many of us jazz fans have seen and heard Dan as a guest appearing with many of the fine festival jazz bands and he always elevates the musical chemistry underway. For 2011, Dan will float among our fine collection of bands and musicians. But, there are two pre-arranged sets to anticipate. On Friday at 8:15 in Vern Burton, Dan will join Doug Finke and his Independence Hall JB to commemorate the classic jazz album by Bobby Hackett and Jack Teagarden called “Coast Concert”. Then, On Saturday at 8:30, also at Vern Burton, Dan will lead a special “All Star” collection of musicians in a hot and exhilarating session. When musicians like these assemble “off the street” so to speak and do what they do, you have to say “that’s musical magic”. Enjoy Dan Barrett’s appearance in 2011.

New Orleans Ale Stars (Vancouver, BC)

When was the last time you were out hearing traditional jazz music and a big part of the audience was under the age of thirty?
For that matter, what was the last really authentic traditional jazz band you enjoyed where half the band was under the age of thirty? And the rhythm section was two thirds female? And everybody, audience and band included, seemed to be having the time of their lives?
This is what the New Orleans Ale Stars (no, that’s not a typo!) are all about … hot jazz played by serious musicians who don’t take themselves too seriously. It’s authentic, it’s infectious and it’s about the best time you can have this side of New Orleans!

Simon Stribling, leader/trumpet
Evan Arntzen, clarinet
Bob Williams, trombone
Ray Skjelbred, piano

Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band (Bellevue, WA)

Uptown Lowdown is approaching its 40th year “In The Business”.
Those 3 words say so little about how a jazzband, especially one that doesn’t play the current popular musical style of the day, manages to stay “In The Business”.
If one followed the band thru the years, one could see and hear the constant evolution, the blending, the tight ensemble developments, and continuous adding of musical ideas further tapping into the reservoir of talent and abilities of the musicians. After all, music is comprised of creativity and this is one creative group. Show biz they are not – but if you want to hear some traditional music played in Uptown Lowdown’s best form – try them.
Here’s what William Berry, Correspondent in Spokane, Washington wrote in his review: “Uptown Lowdown is to traditional jazz what Mozart is to classics. Every note they play has a purpose, nothing is out of place, and each player is not only strong but has found a balancing point for his or her place in the mix.”

Bert Barr, cornet/leader

Independence Hall Jazz Band (Louisville, KY)

This is at least the third time Doug Finke’s Independence Hall JB has played our festival. This band is made up of all professional musicians – i.e. each one earns his living from music alone. Each musician can play in several different genres of music. But, with Independence Hall, they play traditional jazz in both the New Orleans and Chicago style. And, they play it exceptionally well. This is another band that West Coast audiences do not get to see and hear very often. It is our pleasure and privilege to have them here.

New Black Eagles Jazz Band (Boston, MA)

Well, there are a few words that come to mind to describe the New Black Eagle JB. These include exemplary, uncompromising, spectacular and hot. But, if you are not familiar with the band, you have to see them play to believe it. The band was born in September 1971 in Boston, MA. In the forty years since, and with truly only a few changes in personnel, they have only gotten better. They set the standard for traditional jazz bands. It is truly a privilege to have this band here for 2011.

West End Jazz Band (Chicago, IL)

The jazz age lasted only about a decade. But as it passed through the twenties, it was one of the wildest decades in the history of our country. It was the Roaring Twenties, the Age of Ballyhoo, easy money and discontent. The younger generation was on a breathless, energetic spree trying to rewrite all the rules in one brief decade. The jazz age produced more than just flappers, bath tub gin, hip flasks and speakeasies. Nothing caught the spirit of the twenties so expressively as the syncopated beat of jazz, and no one recreates it as well as the West End Jazz Band with genuine hot and sweet dance styles of the 1920s and the 1930s.

Members include:
Mike Bezin, drums, cornet, drums, vocals, leader

John Otto, reeds/vocals

Andy Schumm, cornet, drums

Mike Walbridge, tuba

Silver Leaf Jazz Band (Portland, OR)

Chris Tyle's Silver Leaf Jazz Band was formed in New Orleans in 1992. Drawing on the tradition of its namesake from the heyday of jazz, for more than ten years the band performed nightly at the Can-Can Jazz Cafe in the Royal Sonesta Hotel. Today leader Chris Tyle makes his home in Portland, Oregon, continuing the tradition of the SLJB in the Pacific Northwest, drawing on the best musical talent for his ensemble. The band's repertoire reflects the best of the traditional jazz idiom; not only the early days of New Orleans but the swinging style of Chicago Jazz. Leader Chris Tyle is a respected jazz historian and writer, and the Silver Leaf Jazz Band was featured on the first episode of Ken Burns' critically acclaimed series "Jazz."
